Shostakovich, Dmitri (1906-1975)
Description:
As the title suggests, Shostakovich's "24 Preludes" is a solo piano piece inspired by Chopin's work of the same name, which had a special meaning for Shostakovich, who was such a skilled pianist that he competed in the "Chopin International Piano Competition" in 1927. Shostakovich himself gave the premiere of the entire work shortly after its completion. Dmitri Zyuganov, the first violinist of the "Beethoven String Quartet" and a friend of Shostakovich's, was inspired to arrange this collection for violin and piano. He arranged four pieces in 1937 and 15 pieces in 1961 and 1963, making them light, witty, and attractive. The remaining five pieces were arranged by the female composer Auerbach in 2000. Now that all are available, the performance opportunities are increasing. The Sonata, written for Oistrakh's birthday, is a profound work with a style in contrast to the Prelude. The final movement is written in the form of a passacaglia and ends quietly and fadingly. It is performed by two Russian virtuosos. Naxos Japan
