Harsanyi, Tibor (1898-1954)
Description:
Harshani was a Hungarian-born composer. After studying with Kodaly in Budapest, he stayed in Paris from 1923 and formed a group called "Ecole de Paris (Paris School)" with Martinů, Tansman, Cherepnin, and other composers from other countries. The group is known for its many unique works that combine the styles of French modernism and jazz with Hungarian folk music. The third collection includes mainly works from the 1920s and "Three Improvisations" from his later years. Most of the pieces are world premiere recordings, allowing the listener to enjoy Harshani's diverse style. The "Piano Sonata," which combines passionate dance rhythms and lyricism, the jazz-like "Bulleske," and the meditative "Piano Suite," are performed with superb technique by Czech pianist Giorgio Koukl, who, like in the first and second collections, was born in the Czech Republic.
