Dubois (1837-1924)
Description:
A collection of works by Théodore Dubois, born in 1837 in Champagne. He was taught by Louis Fanard, director of church music at Reims Cathedral, and later studied with Ambroise Thomas at the Paris Conservatory, where he was awarded the Grand Prix de Rome in 1861. Thereafter, he served as music director of the Madeleine and Sainte-Clotilde churches, and in 1896, upon the death of Thomas, he was appointed director of the Paris Conservatory. However, he resigned after Ravel was disqualified from the Prix de Rome in 1905. This album contains two chamber pieces written at that time. One is a piano quartet written in classical form, and the other is a piano quintet in which the second violin is replaced by an oboe in search of a unique sound. In both pieces, each instrument layers delicate melodies based on the sound of the piano. Enjoy the performances by master musicians such as Oliver Trindle and Stefan Seely. Naxos Japan
