The MR Collection represents some of the earliest steel furniture designs by Mies van der Rohe. The material choice was inspired by fellow Bauhaus master Marcel Breuer, while the forms are thought to be modern derivatives of 19th century iron rocking chairs. Tubular steel was the catalyst for the extensive experiments in cantilevered seating that resulted in Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's germinal MR Collection of 1927-29.

Construction
Frame made of tubular stainless steel in a matt and chrome finish. White, black, and an archival dark red are now available for the MR Chair and MR Tables by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. “When these pieces were first made by workshops in Germany their frames were painted, giving us a precedent to build on and license to take on the recoloring,” says Knoll Senior Vice President of Design, Jonathan Olivares. “Seeing the tubular structures in white, black and red, the way these colors interact with the seats and backrests, completely changes our perception of the work and allows us to see them with fresh eyes.”
Upholstery
Comes in three shades of cowhide: black, light brown and white-beige. Or, you can now specify the chair with Rattan upholstery, giving a softer, natural feel. The rattan version comes with or without arms.
