“Turn Again Home tells, in plain, simple prose, two phases of the author’s adventurous life.  Phase one is centred in the Kimberley’s at the turn of the century and tells of life on one of the Durack properties, Lissadel.  What unfolds is a picture of a harsh and unyielding country; a country always ready to strike back at its would-be conquerors.  The grim determination of these pioneers and the courage with which they faced isolation, sickness, the Aboriginal population, and the seemingly insurmountable problems of running a large cattle station, are vividly portrayed.
The second phase is in the Far East.  Here the author meets and describes a typical colonial settlement about 1910.  Shanghai has poverty, ugliness, and barbarianism even for a man toughened by Kimberley experience.  Little relief is obtained by his joining an American milling operation in the Philippines.  Again, it is man setting himself against nature.
Turn Again Home is a simple story, but its very simplicity accentuates the complexity of the hardships which confronted the author.”
