History of Russian Piano Trios by the Brahms Trio, Vol. 2. While the first collection (8.574112) introduced works by Alyabiev, Glinka, and Anton Rubinshtein, which marked the beginning of the genre, the second collection features the monumental work "In Memory of a Great Artist" by Tchaikovsky and the East Prussian-born Russian pianist and composer It includes a piano trio by Paul (Pavel) Papst. Tchaikovsky's work is a memorial to his old friend Nikolai Rubinshtein and is a profound work in two long movements. Papst's Trio is little known, but this one was written in memory of Nikolai's brother, Anton Rubinshtein. It is mainly in A major, but features flowing harmonies that oscillate between major and minor keys. Naxos Japan
