The fourth in Hans Rosbout's SWR archival recording box series is a collection of symphonies by Joseph Haydn. Rothbout is known as an authority on contemporary music, but he is also gaining renewed attention for his excellent performances of Mozart and other classical works, and his "concise and lean" interpretation is on full display in this Haydn. The Haydn concertos are performed by some of the finest soloists of the time, including Gendron and Axenfeldt. Also noteworthy is the only stereo recording of the entire cycle, the 1958 Symphony No. 45 with the Berlin Philharmonic, digitally remastered from the original tapes in the SWR collection. Naxos Japan
