Lightweight and always pushing the technical envelope, Petzl's Nomic has set the standard for technical tools for the past decade, which is a very Petzl thing to do. From top roping behind your rad partner or -- if you are that rad partner -- sinking picks into steep ice or mixed terrain, the Nomic literally cannot disappoint you.
As one of the most balanced axes on the market, the Nomics offer up a satisfying swing, all while shaving grams here and there over the years. The handle and shaft, however, is where this tool really shines. Petzl added a plastic insert between the shaft and the head, eliminating the fearsome wobble of previous iterations and buttressing durability. The double handle offers a multitude of grips and stability when switching hands, updated to be slightly wider and more comfortable in the hand.
The Nomic features a minimalist hammer that can be removed altogether or swapped out with an adze, depending on terrain. The tapered PUR'ICE pick (always with the screaming capitalization, Petzl?) offers unparalleled penetration and can also be swapped out with the pick of your choice.
