Here is a wonderful little piece of non-conformist history. Joseph Irons [1795-1852] was at one time a parishioner of John Newton at St. Mary, Woonooth and a close personal friend. He then became, under the influence of Newton, minister at the famed Grove Chapel, Camberwell and followed in Newton's footsteps to write his own hymnal. His sermons were deeply Calvinistic and experimental. Spurgeon had a deep appreciation for them and incorporated many of them into his Our Own Hymn-book, published 1866. His sermons were published for many years as The Grove Chapel and have been almost continually in print. Still in high favor amongst the deeply and experimentally reformed.

The present large format pulpit Bible was presented to Joseph Irons by his congregation for use in the pulpit at the Grove Chapel. It is inscribed to him and also has some marginal notes which appear to be in his hand. It has been respined and has some repairs to the first few leaves, etc.,

The Holy Bible Containing the Old and New Testaments: Translated Out of the Original Tongues and with the Former Translations Diligently Compared, etc., Oxford. University Press. 1840.

Full elaborate calf, respined. 10 x 13 inches. Wonderful piece of preaching history.
