This carved and painted wooden mask--an early 20th century Mexican dance mask--feels so contemporary to me. In its terrific directness, it reminds me somehow of Plains Indian ledger drawings and shields: just stunning. The matte green, red and black dividing the face into three parts and then banded on the horns could not have been better, and it has only gotten better with age, yielding a really gorgeous surface. The nose and horns are carved from separate pieces of wood and have been inserted like plugs, with the nose wiggling a bit if one tries, though it seems perfectly stable.
7 3/4" tall x 7 1/2" wide (at horns) x 6 1/2" deep. Face itself measures 4 1/2" across. Wired on the back for hanging.
