199th Infantry Brigade - Redcatchers

The 199th Infantry Brigade (Light) is a unit of the United States Army which served in the Army Reserve from 1921 to 1940, in the active army from 1966 to 1970 (serving in the Vietnam War), briefly in 1991–1992 at Fort Lewis, and from 2007 as an active army training formation at Fort Benning.

The 199th Infantry Brigade was activated for service in Vietnam in 1966 and deployed to the Republic of Vietnam, where it served with distinction throughout the war. Known as the "Redcatchers," the brigade conducted combat operations in the areas around Saigon and throughout III Corps Tactical Zone, engaging Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army forces in countless firefights, ambushes, and major operations.

Vietnam War Service - Combat Operations

The 199th Infantry Brigade arrived in Vietnam in December 1966 and immediately began combat operations. The brigade's area of operations included the critical region around Saigon, where it worked to secure the capital and surrounding areas from enemy attack. The Redcatchers conducted search and destroy missions, cordon and search operations, and ambush patrols, engaging the enemy in close combat in jungles, villages, and rice paddies.

During the Tet Offensive of 1968, the 199th Infantry Brigade played a crucial role in defending Saigon and defeating enemy forces that had infiltrated the capital. The brigade's soldiers fought house-to-house battles, cleared enemy positions, and helped restore security to the city. Throughout the war, the Redcatchers participated in major operations including Operation Fairfax, Operation Enterprise, and numerous other combat missions.

The soldiers of the 199th Infantry Brigade endured the hardships of combat in Vietnam—the heat, humidity, jungle terrain, booby traps, and constant threat of enemy contact. They conducted day and night patrols, established ambushes, defended fire support bases, and fought in close combat against a determined enemy. Many earned Silver Stars, Bronze Stars, and Purple Hearts for their valor and sacrifice.
