This eighth edition is dedicated to ‘letters’, whether that be physical letters ‘that crease, fold, tear and rip’ with a preordained destination, the act and severance of communication, or the taxonomy of linguistics and written communication. The contents page is aptly organised from A-Z, with the issue opening to Bhanu Kapil’s alphabetical ‘Bestiary For A Non-Genetic Descendant’, printed on directory yellow paper stock. Elsewhere, Meg Miller pens an essay exploring feeling through faltering language, Kate Briggs playfully dissects the infinite interpretations of the letter ‘A’ when stressed and placed in different contexts, and Rebecca Ross gives a chronological low-down on the evolution of The Royal Mail’s letter sorting system.
