PQQ is pyrroloquinoline quinone – a quinone molecule that is able to reduce oxidants in our body. It is then recycled as the active form through the action of glutathione. In terms of structure and action, it resembles vitamin. Nevertheless, it is not included in this category of substances. PQQ is primarily a cofactor – a molecule that acts as an enhancer for enzymes that need help to function properly. This co-factor molecule carries electrons, which is crucial for the work of our energy-generating mitochondria.

PQQ was first recognized in 1964 as an enzyme cofactor in bacteria by biochemist Jens Hauge. It wasn’t until 2003 that Japanese researcher Tadafumi Kato stated that PQQ also occurs in rodents and other mammals, including humans.
