Quinn James is a Kwakwaka’wakw artist from the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island whose work is grounded in traditional Northwest Coast carving, cultural protocol, and ceremonial knowledge. Raised within the potlatch system and trained by his father Simon Dick James, he carved his first mask at the age of 13 and has since developed a practice that bridges contemporary expression with ancestral Kwakwaka’wakw traditions. His experience as a dancer, including performing the Raven Transformation dance, gives his work a rare functional understanding of masks as living cultural objects rather than purely decorative forms. Quinn James’s carvings are an excellent choice for collectors seeking authentic Indigenous artwork that carries forward generational knowledge, cultural integrity, and evolving contemporary design.
