An Air Ministry, WW2 Cockpit Dashboard Clock with Original Military Markings, Dated to 1944

What’s On Offer

A genuine original cockpit clock with military engravings, including the Stores Ref. 6A/1002. The case is crafted from powder-coated aluminium alloy metal; it does have some wear, but nothing we wouldn't expect to see. Featuring a self-starting keyless 1-day movement with a centre second hand, the clock is wound by rotating the bezel and the hands are set by pressing a spring-loaded lever projecting from the lower right corner whilst rotating the bezel. The dummy hands are present for setting the 'time of trip'.

The backplate is A.M. (Air Ministry) marked and has a date reference 10451/44. The typical black dial boasts the synonymous military white Arabic numerals, which are part luminous. This type of clock was used in the likes of Ansons, Battles, Beaufighters, some Spitfires, Beauforts, Sunderlands, Austers, Lancasters and Mosquitos. This would make a wonderful gift for a military enthusiast and could be mounted as a unique desk or mantle clock - or even in a classic car! It's remarkable that these clocks have survived so long and still manage to keep ticking - a superb piece of British military history for somebody to enjoy and pass down.

Our watchmaker has recently serviced this clock, so it is running well and keeping good time. He has also advised that this is more than likely a Smiths clock; however, it displays no markings to this effect.

Unfortunately, while in storage with us, the glass has cracked, and we are unable to find a replacement for it, but we still believe it is aesthetically pleasing enough to keep. See the photographs to see the damage.
