With its vivid orange husks resembling delicate paper lanterns, the 'Hozuki' (Chinese lantern plant) has long been loved in Japan as a symbol of summer.
In Tokyo’s historic Asakusa district, the annual 'Hozuki Ichi' (Hozuki Market) fills the grounds of Senso-ji Temple with bright displays of hozuki plants, especially around July 9–10—when it’s believed that a single prayer at the temple brings the same blessings as praying every day for 46,000 days.
While in many European countries the hozuki is often associated with autumn and used in dried flower arrangements, in Japan it evokes the atmosphere of early summer, temple fairs, and nostalgic street scenes.
