The original album, which reached #2 on the U.S. Albums Chart and #1 in the U.K. Albums Chart, was released in 1996 and was R.E.M.'s last studio recording due to Bill Berry's departure the following year.As his fifth collaboration with longtime producer Scott Litt ("Green," "Out of Time," "Automatic for the People," "Monster"), the album is full of cinematic imagery, dissonance, and haunting effects, with new sound experimenting with new sonic textures filled with cinematic imagery, dissonance, and haunting effects.
